ARCTIC – SSW becomes a member of the APPLICATE community
We are pleased to announce that SSW law firm has become a member of the APPLICATE community (an acronym from: the Advanced Prediction in Polar regions and beyond: Modelling, observing system design and LInkages associated with a Changing Arctic ClimaTE).
The €8 million project, financed by the EU HORIZON 2020 Research and Innovation programme, investigates ways in which weather and climate prediction can be improved in the face of a rapidly changing Arctic. The project officially commenced in November 2016 but the kick-off meeting took place in February 2017. The project will be carried out over a period of four years. The main goal is to develop enhanced predictive capacity by bringing together scientists from academia, research institutions and operational prediction centres, including experts in weather and climate prediction and forecast dissemination. APPLICATE will also develop strong user-engagement and dissemination activities, including the pro-active engagement of end-users and the exploitation of modern communication and dissemination methods.
SSW participates in the APPLICATE programme as an external partner, being a member of the so-called “User Group” (UG), i.e. an advisory body representing stakeholders from the private and public sectors). The members of the UG will receive information on the project’s status, including its progress and results. The UG’s task is to provide APPLICATE with comments and suggestions from the perspective of the potential beneficiaries of the results to be generated by the programme (e.g. whether the results are relevant to stakeholders, or as to the way the results are presented). Thus, the primary goal is to maximize the exchange of knowledge and to obtain feedback which will establish the direction of certain research aspects within APPLICATE.
Sudden climate changes in the Arctic region will influence the climate and weather across the entire Northern Hemisphere. These changes may undoubtedly open up new business opportunities or materially affect current business activities that are exposed to their influence. Knowledge about the status and nature shape of forecasting mechanisms studies should therefore prove valuable from the medium and long-term business planning perspective, specifically to the following stakeholders:
- companies engaged in Arctic shipping and global shipping corporations,
- insurance industry – questions related to the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code),
- mining companies,
- banks or investment companies already engaged in Arctic projects,
- in mid-latitudes: also entrepreneurs within the energy industry (energy traders; transmission system operators, wind farm owners / investors) and entrepreneurs engaged in agriculture (e.g. vine cultivation).
